Goodell highlighted the NFL's early presence in Berlin, noting that the league hosted a preseason game at the Olympic Stadium 34 years ago, long before the Berlin Thunder became a part of the NFL Europe league in the early 2000s. This historical connection, he added, laid the foundation for the league’s continued engagement with the city.

Growth of NFL Fanbase in Germany

Germany has become an increasingly important market for the NFL, with nearly 20 million American football fans across the country. “Now, with almost 20 million NFL fans in Germany, we'll make a historic return to the city playing a regular season game for the first time as we open the next chapter in our relationship with Berlin,” Goodell stated, underscoring the significance of this event in the broader context of the league’s global strategy.

Berlin: A Hub for Global Sports

Iris Spranger, Berlin’s senator for the interior and sports, also expressed enthusiasm about the NFL's long-term presence in the city. “This long-term partnership with the NFL will continue to boost Berlin as a global sports metropolis,” she said. “It will excite fans at the Olympic Stadium and create worldwide visibility.”

Spranger further noted that the upcoming 2025 NFL game in Berlin is expected to drive significant economic benefits for the city, from increased tourism to international exposure. "The 2025 NFL Berlin game means worldwide visibility, numerous international guests, increased tourism, and high economic value across the city,” she added, reflecting the broader impact the game will have on the region.

 NFL Games Across Germany

The NFL’s international series in Germany began with two games in Munich’s Allianz Arena, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. In 2024, the Carolina Panthers triumphed over the New York Giants in a thrilling 20-17 overtime victory. Frankfurt has also hosted two games, including the Kansas City Chiefs' win over the Miami Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts' victory over the New England Patriots in November 2023.

 Looking Ahead: Super Bowl 2025

As the NFL continues to expand its global footprint, all eyes are now on the 2025 Super Bowl, which will take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9. This marks the 11th time New Orleans will host the prestigious event. The Super Bowl will also feature a performance by rapper Kendrick Lamar during the halftime show.

With more games planned and the league’s growing fanbase in Germany, the NFL’s commitment to the European market, and specifically Berlin, continues to strengthen its international appeal.
