England’s second innings struggle
England struggled to recover in their second innings. After Australia took a 177-run lead, England lost six wickets for just 134 runs on day three. Ben Stokes fought hard with a resilient 50, while Will Jacks added 41, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered. Neser finished with five wickets in the second innings, and England were bowled out for 241, setting Australia a small target of 65 runs.
Australia chase with ease
Chasing 65, Australia’s openers got them off to a steady start. Travis Head scored 22 off 22 balls, and Labuschagne added 3 off 6. Steve Smith then came in at number four and finished the match spectacularly, scoring 23 not out off just 9 balls, including two fours and two sixes, with a strike rate of 255. Jake Weatherald also remained unbeaten on 17. Australia finished 69/2 in just 10 overs, sealing an emphatic eight-wicket win.
Root’s maiden Century in Australia goes in vain
Earlier in the match, Joe Root hit his first Test century in Australia, scoring 138 off 206 balls with 15 fours and a six. His effort helped England reach 334 in the first innings, but Starc’s six-wicket haul ensured Australia maintained control.
Starc shines with bat and ball
Australia responded in style with the bat. Jake Weatherald scored 72, Marnus Labuschagne 65, Steve Smith 61, and Alex Carey 63. Starc made an impressive 77 off 141 balls, helping Australia post a massive total of 511. England’s bowlers struggled to make breakthroughs, with Bryden Carse taking four wickets but conceding 152 runs.
