India's star opener Shubman Gill achieved a career milestone, breaking into the top three of the ICC ODI batter's rankings while his teammate Ishan Kishan also achieved career-best spot. Shubman's surge in rankings was propelled by his unbeaten 67-run inning off 62 balls against Nepal in a critical Asia Cup match on Monday. At just 23 years old, Gill has been making waves in the world of cricket, especially in the 50-over format throughout this year.
Notably, Gill is India's leading run-scorer across all cricket formats in 2023, amassing 1361 runs at an impressive average of over 46. In the ODI arena, he has been a consistent performer, racking up 827 runs in 14 matches, which includes a whopping double century against New Zealand. The year has seen him in stellar form, scoring five centuries, one of which was his double hundred against New Zealand, confirming his status as one of Indian cricket's brightest prospects.
While his journey has mostly been on the rise, Gill has faced some challenges recently. His form witnessed a slight dip, scoring only two half-centuries in his last eight matches and delivering a less-than-impactful performance in India's home series against Australia. Even in the Asia Cup's opening match against Pakistan, he managed to score only 10 runs.
Despite these challenges, his recent innings against Nepal shot his ICC ODI rating to a career-high 750 points, earning him the third spot behind Babar Azam with 882 points and Rassie van der Dussen at 777 points.
Gill is not the only Indian cricketer climbing the ranks. Ishan Kishan, propelled by his 82 against Pakistan, moved up 12 places to claim the 24th spot. Virat Kohli remains in the top 10, holding the tenth position, while India's captain Rohit Sharma is not far behind, sitting at the 11th spot.
As 2023 continues to unfold, cricket enthusiasts closely watch Shubman Gill, whose consistent performances make him a likely candidate to set and break numerous records. Even with a slight dip in form, his talent and potential keep fans optimistic about the future of Indian cricket.
