After India's massive innings and 132-run win over Australia in Nagpur on February 11, the side have now moved to the top of the ICC Test Team rankings, making the side the World No.1 team across all three formats — ODIs, T20Is and now Test.
The Rahul Dravid-coached side were already on top of the ODI and T20I rankings but moved to the top of the Test cricket rankings in the latest announcements by the ICC.
The side have dominated Test cricket over the last two years but lost their series against South Africa in 2022, as well as the one-off rescheduled Test against England in Birmingham. With their win over Australia in the first Test pushing them closer to the World Test Championship (WTC) final, their latest Test ranking will surely be an added boost heading into the second Test match against Australia in Delhi.
India will qualify for the final of the WTC if they beat Australia 3-1 or better in the four-match series. They currently lead the series 1-0.
Ironically, India took the place of Australia, who were on top of the ranking heading into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. They currently have 115 rating points from 32 matches in the cycle. While Australia have slipped to No.2. England are third and reigning WTC winners New Zealand are 4th in the rankings.
Prior to this series, India's 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand in the ODI rankings took them to the top of the rankings in ODIs. The Men in Blue lost the semifinal of the T20 World Cup to England in 2022 but top the ICC T20I team rankings too.
India's ‘MISSION 111’ to top ICC rankings
Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and the coaching of Ravi Shastri, India kicked off the MISSION 111 campaign to make India the top-ranked side across all three formats. They finally achieved their dream thanks to their performances in bilateral series across formats.
Several Indian players also dominate the ICC player rankings across the three formats. Rishabh Pant (7th) and Rohit Sharma (8th) are in the top 10 batters while R Ashwin (2nd) and Jasprit Bumrah (5th) are among the world's best bowlers in Test cricket.
Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin are also the top-two ranked Test all-rounders in the world. In ODIs, Shubman Gill is ranked 6th, Virat Kohli 7th and Rohit Sharma 9th in the ICC rankings for batters while Mohammed Siraj is the No.1 ODI bowler.
Indian cricketers' domination also extends to T20 Internationals with Suryakumar Yadav on top in the rankings for batters and Hardik Pandya in second position for T20I all-rounders.
