Five-time champions Australia announced their 15-member strong squad for the highly-anticipated ODI World Cup 2023 set to commence in India from October 5. Kangaroos had initially announced an 18-player preliminary list last month but narrowed it down to 15 players on Wednesday, September 6. With less than a month left for the World Cup to kick off, the stakes are sky-high for the Australian team.
Missing the cut from the initial roster are all-rounder Aaron Hardie, pacer Nathan Ellis, and young spinner Tanveer Sangha. Test cricket sensation Marnus Labuschagne is also absent from the finalised lineup. In a bid for proven competency, selectors have leaned heavily toward experience while finalising their squad. Pat Cummins, the fast bowler with an impressive track record, will captain the side. He'll be ably supported by seasoned quicks Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, handling the new ball. Sean Abbott edged out Ellis to claim the final slot as the back-up pacer.
When it comes to spinning options, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa make the cut. As for the batters, the roster features established names like David Warner, Steve Smith, and Travis Head. The batting line-up will be further bolstered by all-rounders Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Cameron Green.
The wicketkeeping duties will be shared between Alex Carey and Josh Inglis, with Carey being the first choice, thanks in part to his commendable performance in the 2019 World Cup held in England and Wales.
Australia's cricket squad is currently in South Africa, where they are engaging in a five-game ODI series against the Proteas. They will then fly to India for a three-match ODI series, providing additional preparation for the World Cup. Official warm-up matches against the Netherlands and Pakistan are also on the itinerary, with the team's first clash at this year's tournament scheduled against host nation India on October 8.
While there are some concerns over the fitness of key players, selection chair George Bailey remains optimistic. "Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Glenn Maxwell are on track in their return to play programs. All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India," Bailey stated.
He further added, “There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament.”
