The ODI World Cup 2023 started on October 5 with much rigour, with New Zealand thrashing England in their opening match of the tournament. Meanwhile, the Indian team has arrived in Chennai for their first match of the tournament against Australia on October 8.

The side came into this game after defeating Australia 2-1 in the ODI series. However, both of India's practice matches were washed out due to rain. Rohit Sharma's team boasts several players who can single-handedly turn the game around. But former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has identified a player who can work wonders at the number six position.

Speaking at the Salaam Cricket event, Sunil Gavaskar exclusively mentioned Hardik Pandya as the perfect batter for the number 6 position. When asked about the most crucial batters in the order for Team India, Gavaskar pointed to numbers 5 and 6. "Players at these positions should be able to change the course of the game, and Hardik Pandya fits perfectly for the number 6 spot. If given 8-10 overs, this player can not only score 60 runs himself but also add an extra 30 runs for the team, contributing a total of 90 runs," he told Sports Tak exclusively.

Drawing a comparison with the 2011 World Cup-winning team, Gavaskar said, "Hardik Pandya needs to play a role similar to Yuvraj Singh."

Gavaskar also praised Virat Kohli, emphasising the significant responsibility on him. Highlighting the difference between the Virat Kohli of 2011 and 2023, Gavaskar remarked, "While Kohli was a young player in 2011, he has now matured and evolved, likening his growth to transitioning from a child to a father figure in cricket. When he was the captain in 2019, the team couldn't clinch the World Cup, so this time he will be eager to win."

Commenting on Kohli's return after a break, Gavaskar has been left impressed. He performed well against Australia and Gavaskar believes he has saved his best for the World Cup, aiming to deliver a strong performance under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. Gavaskar further added that this tournament could be named after not just Kohli but several batsmen, given the nature of the pitches.
