On Thursday, October 19, Bangladesh is set to face a formidable Indian squad in MCA Stadium in Pune for the ODI World Cup 2023 for their fourth match of this edition of the tournament. However, in a big blow to the neighbouring country, there's uncertainty over the participation of Bangladesh's key player, Shakib Al Hasan, due to an injury he sustained in the prior match against New Zealand.

During the clash against New Zealand, Shakib Al Hasan suffered a significant injury to his left quadriceps. The same was confirmed by stand-in Bangladesh captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto. The injury occurred during the 29th over of Bangladesh's batting when Shakib seemed to plant his leg awkwardly on the ground while completing a run, taking his score from 23 to 24. Till then, he had scored 24 off 45 balls. However, he changed the gear and reached 40 off 51 balls before Lockie Ferguson got the better of him.

Despite the evident discomfort, he showcased incredible determination, notching up 40 runs from 51 balls and delivering a full ten-over spell.

Post-match, an urgent scan was conducted on Shakib's injury. This isn't the first time the veteran cricketer has faced injuries; he had earlier encountered a finger and foot injury during training. However, this recent setback seemed to hinder his on-field performance more noticeably.

Throughout the New Zealand match, Shakib's struggle was evident. His running was hampered, and pain was visible even whilst bowling. He still managed to bowl his full quota, securing one wicket for 54 runs. His pain was so severe that he missed the post-match award ceremony.

In an exclusive chat with India Today, Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud shared that the decision regarding Shakib's participation would be made just before the game. "He is good no pain and no discomfort but he is not running fast we need to see his fitness for the match. So we have decided that will test him at the ground and then will take a call," Mahmud stated.

Should Shakib be absent, it would be a significant setback for Bangladesh in this pivotal ODI World Cup fixture. Having already faced two defeats in their initial three matches, Bangladesh is keen on delivering a strong performance against India in Pune.
