Quinton de Kock announces shock retirement from ODI cricket after World Cup squad announcement

South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from ODI cricket after the conclusion of World Cup 2023 in India. 

 

The 30-year-old will continue playing T20I cricket after retiring from ODI cricket. Also, he will play more franchise cricket around the world. He will be playing for Melbourne Renegades in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 season. 

 

ODI record

 

The 30-year-old has scored 5,966 runs from 140 innings at an average of 44.85 including 17 centuries and 29 half-centuries. He has scored at an impressive strike rate of 96.08. The Johannesburg-born cricketer has also hit three consecutive centuries in ODIs against India. 

Earlier in the day, CSA announced South Africa’s squad for the World Cup. Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis have been left out of the World Cup squad.

Test retirement came as a surprise too
 

Earlier in December 2021, De Kock had announced his retirement from Test cricket after a loss to Virat Kohli-led India in the Centurion Test. In Test cricket, he has scored 3,300 runs from 91 innings at an average of 38.82 including six centuries and 22 half-centuries.

 

Milestone in waiting 
 

South Africa will start their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. De Kock will need 37 more runs to become the first South Africa wicketkeeper-batter to score 6,000 ODI runs. He will also become the fifth wicketkeeper-batter in the world to score 6,000 runs in ODI cricket.
 

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (13,341), India's MS Dhoni (10,773), Australia's Adam Gilchrist (9,410) and Bangladesh's Mushfiqur Rahim (6,754) are ahead of De Kock on the list.
