Angelo Mathews contested that the helmet malfunctioned while he adjusted it, not prior to his arrival.

During their ODI World Cup 2023 match at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, November 6, Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews encountered an unusual dismissal. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed-out decision as Mathews took more than two minutes to face his first ball due to a broken helmet strap.

Mathews contested that the helmet malfunctioned while he adjusted it, not prior to his arrival. Despite his efforts, Mathews was compelled to leave the field without facing a single ball following a contentious exchange. The incident injected energy into the match, which had been relatively lacklustre, as Mathews engaged in a discussion with Shakib and urged him to consult the umpires.

The episode triggered a flurry of reactions on cricketing social media, with criticism directed at Bangladesh and their captain Shakib Al Hasan for Mathews' dismissal. Former India legend and World Cup-winning batter Gautam Gambhir expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the situation.

"Absolutely pathetic what happened in Delhi today! #AngeloMathews," he wrote on x.com (formerly Twitter)

His disapproval was echoed by former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn as well,  but the pacer seemed more surprised than angry with the incident.

'Well, that wasn’t cool,' tweeted Dale Steyn.

40.1 Out Timed out
40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. 40.1.2 In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match).  For the purposes of that Law the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 3 minutes referred to above.
40.2 Bowler does not get credit
The bowler does not get credit for the wicket.
Sri Lankan captain talked to the Bangladesh coach too
Following the incident, captain Kusal Mendis conversed with Bangladesh coach and former Sri Lankan cricketer Chandika Hathurusinghe, yet the decision remained unchanged. Commentator Russell Arnold, displeased with the unfolding events at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, expressed his discontent.
