England all-rounder Chris Woakes has been recalled in England’s squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. In a recent interview, Woakes admitted that he had thought that his T20I career might have been over but was shocked when he got a call for the T20I series against Sri Lanka. The bowling all-rounder’s phenomenal performance against the Sri Lanka series as well as in the domestic tournaments earned him a call for the T20 World Cup. Before the Sri Lanka series, the 32-year-old last played a T20I in 2014 but was dropped from the side after ordinary performances. But now after making a comeback in the T20I side, Woakes is looking forward to winning the World Cup for England.
Thought T20 career was over
“Certainly hadn't given up but at the same time I thought maybe that ship had potentially sailed. I'd be lying if I said I thought I was probably going to get another go. I hoped I might get another go, whenever that was, and I wasn't thinking of retiring from that format but I certainly thought they might have moved on from going back to me,” the Birmingham-born cricketer said.
“There are no guarantees that myself, or anyone else, will be selected for the next one so you have to make the most of the here and now. It's a great opportunity to lift silverware for your country. To be honest, I think this T20 World Cup could be won by pretty much anyone, so that's also exciting and it's a great tournament to be a part of,” the all-rounder added.
Woakes T20I career so far
The 2019 World Cup-winner has not had an impressive T20I career. He made his T20I debut in 2011 but due to unimpressive performances, the all-rounder was dropped from the squad. Till now, Woakes has played on 10 T20Is. He has picked eight scalps only while and scored 91 runs batting in the lower order.
