India knows the formula to beat Australia in knockout matches as they have done so four times in the past and the experience will come in handy when Rohit Sharma & Co. take on the Baggy Greens in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval.
Let's take a closer look at the four ICC knockout matches that India has won against Australia.
1998: India thumped Australia by 44 runs in a Champions Trophy quarter-final game in Dhaka on October 28, 1998. Sachin Tendulkar scored a thrilling century and for his knock of 141 runs off 128 balls, the 'Master Blaster' was awarded the Man of the Match award.
2000: In another quarter-final tie in the Champions Trophy, India managed to get the better of Australia. The Men in Blue defeated the Baggy Greens by 20 runs. Yuvraj Singh played a destructive knock of 84 runs in 80 balls and was awarded the Man of the Match award.
2007: In the T20 World Cup semi-final fixture, India defeated Australia by 15 runs in Durban. Yuvraj Singh's thunderous knock of 70 runs off 30 balls lashed with five fours and as many sixes ended Australia's campaign.
2011: In the ODI World Cup quarter-final contest, India defeated Australia by five wickets in Ahmedabad. The protagonist behind India's win was once again Yuvraj Singh, who bagged two wickets with the ball and scored unbeaten 57 runs with the bat. He also smashed the winning boundary.
It will be for the first time in two decades that India and Australia will lock horns in an ICC tournament final. The last time these two sides locked horns in an ICC final was in 2003 when Australia defeated India in the ODI World Cup final. The 2023 WTC final will be played between June 7 and June 11 at The Oval, London.
India finished runners-up in the last edition of WTC as they lost the final against New Zealand. This time, Rohit Sharma's brigade would look to cross the final hurdle and end their ICC trophy drought.
