In 2022, Virat Kohli captained India in the South Africa Test series. When Kohli got injured in South Africa, KL Rahul led India in the Johannesburg Test. Later, Rohit Sharma took over as India's all-format captain. Rohit led India in the home limited-overs series against Sri Lanka and West Indies.

After Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, Rohit was rested. With Rahul getting injured, Rishabh Pant took over the captaincy in the five-T20I series against South Africa.

In Ireland, Hardik Pandya-led the second-string squad in the T20I series as other senior players were gearing up for the Test.

As Rohit contracted Covid-19 ahead of the rescheduled Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Jasprit Bumrah was named captain for the final Test of the series.

As Pandya was rested for the T20 warm-up games, 37-year-old Karthik donned the captaincy hat. Arshdeep Singh got to showcase his talent after warming benches in the home T20I series and Ireland.
