Yuvraj-possesed Bumrah evokes Broad's 2007 WC nightmare, scripts world-record with 35-run over in Tests

India's stand-in Test skipper and prime pacer Jasprit Bumrah is known for his wizardry with the ball, but on Day 2 of the fifth Test against England he did something unthinkable with the ball by scripting a world record in the longest format of the game on Saturday.

Bumrah clobbered England's Stuart Broad left, right and centre as the England pacer conceded 35 run in an over, which is the most expensive over in the Test history. The 35-run over must have evoke Stuart Broad's 2007 T20 World Cup, when India's star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh hit Broad for six sixes in an over. Bumrah belted 29 off those 35 runs in Broad's over in which four boundaries and two sixes were hit which also had six extra runs, five wides and a no-ball.

Bumrah surpassed the legendary Brian Lara's feat by one run.

The world record stayed with Lara for 18 years, he had hit South African left-arm spinner Robin Peterson for 28 runs in a Test match in 2003-04, which included four fours and two sixes off six legal deliveries.

Former Australia player George Bailey had also scored 28 in an over but he was behind Lara in terms of boundary count.

It started with a mistimed hook that went for a boundary, and in frustration, Broad bowled a bouncer that went for five wides.

The next ball was again dug in short and another top-edge got Bumrah seven runs, including a no-ball.

The next three balls were hit for boundaries in different directions, one through mid-on, one through fine leg and the last one through mid-wicket.

To add insult to his injuries, Bumrah did the proverbial "Bazball" (English cricket's current buzzword that lays emphasis on the attacking intent brought about by new coach Brendon McCullum) with a six over deep mid-wicket.

Most runs off an over in Test cricket

35 runs - Jasprit Bumrah off Stuart Broad, Birmingham 2022
28 runs - Brian Lara off Robin Peterson, Johannesburg 2003
28 runs - George Bailey off James Anderson, Perth 2013
28 runs - Keshav Maharaj off Joe Root, Port Elizabeth 2020

Later, Bumrah was dismissed after scoring 31 off 16 which was loaded with four boundaries and two maximums.

Taking about the match, riding on Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja's (104) stunning centuries, India posted a huge total of 416 before England on Day 2.

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja once again proved why he is an indispensable asset for India as he pummelled his first overseas Test century and third overall.

He followed Rishabh Pant's (146) path and built on his unbeaten overnight score of 83 to reach the three-figure-mark off 183 balls with a four through point off Matthew Potts. Later he was dismissed at the score of 104 off 194 when India's scoreboard read 375/9.

In the World Test Championship (2021-23), Jadeja has a better batting average than Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Steve Smith, David Warner and Kane Williamson during the same phase.

The 33-year-old all-rounder had scored his first Test hundred in 2018 against West Indies at Rajkot and had to wait for his second, which came against Sri Lanka in Mohali in March this year.

Jadeja stitched a crucial 222-run stand for the sixth wicket with Rishabh Pant (146) to bail India out of trouble after it was stuttering at 98 for five on the opening day of the match on Friday.

Earlier, Pant’s record-breaking and counter-attacking 146-run knock accompanied with Jadeja’s resilient unbeaten 83 has helped India dominate on Day 1 at Edgbaston. Pant, Jadeja broke records with the 222-run partnership for the sixth wicket to help India recover from 98/5 on a rain-affected day.

The rescheduled Test did not get off to an ideal start as Shubman Gill ot out early. Gill got out to James Anderson after scoring 17 runs. Promoted as an opener in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara stayed in the middle for more than an hour but eventually got out to Anderson.

Rain played spoilsport in the first session as Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli rushed back to the dressing room. After an early lunch, the play resumed and Matty Potts struck twice to get rid of Vihari and Kohli. Vihari got out lbw after scoring 20 runs. Kohli got out trying to leave the ball. The inswinging delivery hit his bat and crashed into the stumps. Kohli scored just 11 runs from 19 deliveries.
