Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has achieved a unique record in Test cricket history. Rohit now holds the record for reaching double figures in most consecutive innings in Test cricket. Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene held the previous record with 29 consecutive double figure scores. Rohit surpassed Jayawardene on Day 4 of 2nd Test of two-Test series against West Indies.

Rohit achieved the record with a six off third over of the innings. West Indies pacer Kemar Roach bowled a full delivery on stumps and Rohit flicked it over wide long-on for a maximum.

Here is a list of batters who have 24 or more consecutive double figures in Test cricket

30* Rohit Sharma (2021-23*)
29 Mahela Jayawardene (2001-02)
25 Len Hutton (1951-53)
25 Rohan Kanhai (1961-65)
24 Mahela Jayawardene (2002-04)
24 AB de Villiers (2012-14)

Rohit was dropped twice in the first session of Day 4. First Shannon Gabriel dropped a dolly. Then debutant Kirk Mckenzie dropped one at square leg. Rohit made full use of the opportunity and reached his half-century from just 35 balls. This is the fastest half-century by an Indian opener in overseas conditions.

In the 12th over, Gabriel made up for his mistake. Rohit hit the ball towards fine-leg where Alzarri Joseph took the catch. He got out after scoring 57 runs from 44 deliveries at a strike rate of 129.55. His innings was studded with five fours and three sixes.

He shared a 98-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal who scored quickly as well before an early lunch was taken due to rain interruption.

Rohit and Jaiswal shared third-highest opening partnership aggregates in a series for India. They put on 466 runs together in the two Test series. This is also the third-highest opening partnership aggregate in a two-match Test series.

Rohit and Jaiswal also shared India’s fastest opening 50-run stand from just 33 deliveries. They scored at a run rate of 8.28 runs per over. This is the second-highest run rate for an opening partnership in Tests (minimum 50 runs).
