Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been knocked out of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 playoffs race with a humiliating loss to Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on May 12. CSK were let down by their batting as they were bundled out for 97 with four overs to go in the innings. Chasing a low score of 98, MI had several hiccups but managed to get over the line with 31 balls to spare and register their third win of the tournament.

Second time in IPL history

This is the second time in the history of the tournament that both MI and CSK have been knocked out of playoffs race. The last time it happened was in the 2016 edition.

Another powerplay collapse

With a target of 98 on the board, MI openers still looked nervous. Mukesh Choudhary was sensational like Daniel Sams with the new ball. Kishan edged one to Dhoni and got out for a single-digit score. Rohit looked to attack CSK bowlers and succeeded on few occasions but Simarjeet Singh bowled one short to him. The ball took an edge off Rohit's bat and landed in Dhoni's gloves.

The promotion of Sams up the order did not work as he got LBW by Choudhary in the fifth over. On-debut Tristan Stubbs had a forgettable outing. Stubbs got LBW too in the same over as MI were reduced to 33/4.

Better sense prevails

Hrithik Shokeen got promoted up the order and it worked. In-form Tilak Varma held on to one end to prevent further damage. The southpaw shared a crucial 38-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Shokeen to stabilise the run chase. Shokeen was bowled by Moeen Ali but it did not turn out to be another twist in the tale. Dhoni tried to apply pressure on Tim David with spinners but the big-hitter hit two sixes to finish off the run chase. Varma remained unbeaten for 32-ball 34.

No power in powerplay overs

CSK's innings got off to the worst start possible. However, the first of the wickets was unfortunate as Devon Conway was given out LBW and there was no DRS available to overturn the decision. The power cut led to the unavailability of DRS in the first few overs of CSK. After Conway's first-ball duck, Moeen Ali became Sams' second victim.

In the second over Robin Uthappa became Jasprit Bumrah's only victim of the day. Uthappa was trapped in front of the stumps as well. Later in the powerplay overs, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu departed. CSK had half of their side down for 29 in the powerplay overs.

Dhoni runs out of partners

MS Dhoni entertained the crowd with a few fireworks in the middle overs. Shivam Dube and Dwayne Bravo looked like they will stick in the middle for a while with their skipper but it did not happen. The tailenders could not stay long at the crease either as CSK were bundled out for 97 with four overs left in the innings. Dhoni remained not out for 36 off 33 deliveries including four fours and a couple of sixes.
