The upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 will not only feature two new franchises but a new set of rules will be introduced as well. The 10-team tournament which is scheduled to commence on March 26, will have few major rule changes which will affect the outcomes of games.

Increase in number of DRS

The numbers of unsuccessful reviews have been increased from one to two. Earlier teams would run out of reviews after one unsuccessful review. The Decision Review System (DRS) was first introduced in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

Strike rule

Almost a week after Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced its new set of rules which will be implemented later this year, IPL has followed suit. After a catch dismissal, the new batter will be on strike (in the same over) irrespective of whether the batters crossed the half-pitch mark or not. The rule was first seen in action in the inaugural edition of The Hundred.

Contingency plan

The last time Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tried hosting IPL amidst Covid-19, it had to be postponed due to bio-bubble breach. Eventually, the second phase of the season was held in United Arab Emirates (UAE) months later. However, this time, the game will go on if a team is able to field 11 players (including seven Indian players or more) with one substitute.

If the team is not able to field 11 players, the match will be rescheduled. If rescheduling of a particular match is not possible, the technical committee will take a decision which will be "final and binding". Also, the opponent will be awarded two points in this case if it is a league stage match.

Super Over rule

In case a match ends in a tie and "conditions do not permit a Super over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available", the winner will be decided on the basis of the points achieved by the two teams in the league stage. This will be applicable for playoffs and final.
