The extravaganza of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is just few hours away from getting underway. The sixteenth edition of the cash-rich league is set to kick off from 7:30 pm at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Friday (March 31). IPL will be seen in its old form with the resumption of good-old home-away format after a wait of three years due to Covid-19 restrictions. All the 10 franchises will get to host games at their own venues yet again.
To set up the mood of IPL 2023, four-time holders Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) will lock horns with each other in the glitzy league's opener. It's not just the old-format which will bring flavour to the IPL this time but also a host of ‘Rule Changes’ which will spice up the thrill of the two-month long affair. Let's take a quick look at it.
Deciding Playing XIs post toss
To add spice to the IPL extravaganza a new rule change will be on display which will see the Playing XIs being decided post the flip of the coin. Earlier, captains of both the teams used to hand over their team sheets to the match referee right ahead of the toss.
'Impact Player'
The 'Impact Player' rule would now see the teams being allowed to substitute a player into the playing XI at any point in the game. The substitute player can bat, bowl and field but would not be able to lead the team as captain.
DRS for wide and No-balls
The IPL 2023 season would also see DRS calls being made for wides and no-balls. The players would be allowed to review wide-ball and no-ball calls by the on-field umpires. It is a welcome move, considering the controversies that had erupted in the past few seasons.
Penalty for unfair movement
Wicket-keepers can now be penalised for making 'unfair movements' behind the stumps. If a wicketkeeper shuffles before the batter hits the ball, it would be considered an 'unfair movement'.
Penalty for slow over-rates
Slow over-rates by teams will now be penalised in the IPL 2023. Teams need to complete their quota of 20 overs within 90 minutes of the play. In case they fail to follow this, an extra player will be played inside the 30-yard circle over every over bowled beyond the time limit as a penalty.
