India's middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will undergo surgery and will miss the entire IPL 2023 followed by World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June. It is yet to be seen when and where Iyer goes under the knife.

"Yes, he will have his back surgery abroad. He is likely to be out of action for at least five months with full rehabilitation," a BCCI source PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The surgery puts Iyer's participation in the ODI World Cup 2023 in jeopardy as well. In his absence, India will have to find a reliable middle-order batter. Recently, Suryakumar Yadav replaced an injured Iyer in the side but registered consecutive golden ducks against Australia.

The lower back injured had forced Iyer out of the final Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. He was also ruled out of the three-ODI series. Iyer has been struggling with lower-back injury for several months. Last year, he missed India's tour of Bangladesh.

In Iyer's absence, Nitish Rana made his IPL captaincy debut for KKR against Punjab Kings (PBKS) last week. On April 3, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan pulled out of IPL 2023 due to personal reasons. KKR are yet to name replacements for Hasan and Iyer.

Under the leadership of Rana, KKR lost to PBKS by seven runs (DLS) method as rain played spoilsport in Mohali. KKR will take on Faf du Plessis' Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 6 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
