It was a topsy-turvy match for Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) young pacer Umran Malik, who created history with a haul of three wickets that dismantled the Mumbai Indians (MI) batters. Heading into the game, Malik had 18 wickets to his name, but after their win over MI, Malik is now the youngest bowler in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to pick up 20 wickets in a single season. However, if not for his crucial scalps, his name would be in the history books for another reason altogether.
In the ninth over of the MI innings, Malik was brought into the attack by skipper Kane Williamson. His first ball was a no-ball, which also gave 1bye. The next ball was another wide as the free hit continued, and the third ball was Malik's second bouncer of the over, which forced the umpire into calling Malik's second no-ball of the over, with him still effectively bowling his first ball of the match. Eventually, on the fourth attempt, Malik got his line and length right and the ball came off the pads to fine leg for one run.
By the fourth attempt of the first ball of the ninth over, Malik had already given away nine runs, just to get that first ball of the over correctly.
Malik made up for his discrepancies when he picked up the wicket of Ishan Kishan to bring an end to the 95-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Kishan while chasing 194-runs. Malik then sent back Daniel Sams and Tilak Varma in the same over itself. His wicket of Sams made him the youngest ever to 20 wickets in an IPL season, breaking a record set by current India pace star Jasprit Bumrah back in 2017.
Malik is also the second pacer after Punjab Kings' (PBKS) Kagiso Rabada to go past the 20-wicket mark in IPL 2022.
Besides his three wickets, Malik gave away just 23 runs, overcoming his poor first over to intimidate the Mumbai batters with his raw pace.
