In-form Virat Kohli has been rested for the third and final T20I of the T20I series against South Africa which will be played at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore. Shreyas Iyer has been named his replacement for the dead rubber against the Temba Bavuma-led side. Team India will be travelling to Australia later this week to begin preparations for T20 World Cup 2022.
Kohli has been in good form of late. After a successful Asia Cup 2022 with the bat which ended his century drought, Kohli scored a half-century against Australia and 49 not out in the second T20I.
On the other hand, Iyer's consistency has taken a hit of late. In the last 10 innings, Iyer had a few disappointing scores and his strike rate came under the scanner as well. However, in his last T20I appearance against West Indies, he scored 64 runs.
Iyer is a part of India’s extended T20 World Cup squad. He is one of the standby players for the mega event. The 27-year-old has scored 1,029 runs at an average of 33.19 from 42 innings including seven half-centuries. His strike rate is 136.55.
India have already taken an unassailable lead in the ongoing T20I series. In a high-scoring encounter at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, India won the match by 16 runs despite David Miller's second T20I century.
After posting a record-breaking total of 237/3, Indian bowlers took early wickets to put pressure on the visitors. Miller managed to keep the game alive but Quinton de Kock struggled early on. In the end, South Africa had too much to chase down in the slog overs.
Earlier, half-centuries from KL Rahul (57), Suryakumar Yadav (61) and contributions from skipper Rohit Sharma (43), Kohli (49) and Dinesh Karthik (17*) entertained the Guwahati crowd.
In the first T20I game as well, India registered a comprehensive victory. South Africa suffered a massive batting collapse and India had 107 runs to chase down. Half-centuries from Rahul and Suryakumar helped India win the game by eight wickets.
