While India registered a comprehensive 62-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20I, skipper Rohit Sharma was not happy with his players’ performance in one department of the game.
India dropped a total of three catches, one catch each by Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah.
“It's consistently happening. We are dropping easy catches. Our fielding coach has some work to do. Come Australia, we want to be a great fielding side,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony referring to T20 World Cup 2022 which will be played in Australia later this year.
India posted 199/2 after being put to bat first by visitors’ skipper Dasun Shanaka. Rohit Sharma missed out on his half-century as he got out for 44 off 32 deliveries whereas Ishan Kishan went on to score record-breaking 89. Rohit praised Kishan for breaking the shackles and scoring freely.
“I know Ishan for a long time now. I know the mindset he has. I know the ability he has as well. It was just about getting the kind of game that he had today. It was so pleasing to watch from the other end. The way he constructed the innings was so good, that is usually a challenge for him. We were talking in the middle about finding gaps,” the 34-year-old said about the wicketkeeper-batter who recently attracted a Rs 15.25 crore bid at Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction.
On his return to international cricket after injury, Ravindra Jadeja could not do much with the bat as he faced just four deliveries with Shreyas Iyer firing at the other end in death overs. However, the left-arm spinner took the wicket of Dinesh Chandimal and conceded 28 runs in his four overs.
“Very happy with Jadeja's return. We want more from him that is why we asked him to bat higher. You will see that happening more and more in the games that he plays for India. I want him to bat up the order more. He is a very improved batter, so we will try and see if we can promote him going forward. We are very clear with what we want to achieve with him in white ball cricket,” Rohit outlined his plans for the all-rounder.
