Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey has revealed that he had to delete his Instagram account following online abuse to his family from England fans after running out Jonny Bairstow during the Ashes 2023.

During the second Ashes Test at Lord's, London, Bairstow assumed that the ball was no longer in play and started walking towards Ben Stokes. Carey was quick to take a shy at the stumps and ran Bairstow out.

The dismissal caused controversy as the England camp felt that it was against the ‘spirit of the game’. English fans were fuming and the controversy took an ugly turn when few of them abused Carey’s family online.

"I didn’t really look into it much; I didn’t have to. I had a lot of people looking at it and monitoring it. You don’t really need to see them. A lot of comments got deleted. It did get pretty nasty from reports. Initially again, if your wife jumps online and you see (you) getting abused or even them getting abused for being your wife and kids, you probably don’t take it too well,” Carey was quoted as saying by the West Australian.

"But 24 hours or 48 hours after that, things simmer down and you understand you’ve done nothing wrong and nothing changes. I actually deleted Instagram for a week or so and just put the phone down and focused on being present with the family,” he added.

Carey scored 200 runs from nine innings in Ashes 2023 at an average of 22.22 including one half-century.

While Australia took a 2-0 lead with a close win in the Lord’s Test, Stokes-led England made a terrific comeback. First, they dominated the third Test which was spoiled by rain. It was followed by two consecutive wins to draw the series 2-2.

Despite two losses, Pat Cummins-led side was able to retain the urn. On the other hand, Australia failed to end the drought of Ashes series win in on England soil. The last time they won the Ashes in England was in 2001.
