Arjun Tendulkar, son of legendary Sachin Tendulkar has been included in Mumbai’s Ranji team ahead of the 2022 season. Arjun will play under the leadership of prolific Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw.
Last year, the left-arm fast bowler made his domestic debut in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Haryana where he took one wicket for 33 runs. The southpaw played just two T20s in the tournament and bagged two wickets at an average of 33.50 and an economy rate of 9.57. In the batting department, he could score only three runs in one innings.
Earlier this year, the 22-year-old was picked in five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the auction at his base price of Rs 20 lakh. The bowling all-rounder is yet to make his IPL debut. He was ruled out of the second phase of IPL 2021 after sustaining an injury.
Shaw has been made captain of the Mumbai’s Ranji team for the first time. The last time he led Mumbai was in last season of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2020-21 where they emerged as champions. It will be a good opportunity for Shaw to prove his worth as a red-ball opener. On the recent India A tour of South Africa A, he could not score a single half-century in the three unofficial Tests despite getting off to a good start on three occasions.
The 41-time Ranji team also includes the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Armaan Jaffer, Sarfaraz Khan, Shivam Dube and Dhawal Kulkarni. Mumbai will begin their Ranji Trophy campaign against Maharashtra on January 13. They have been placed in Elite Group C. Their second encounter will be against Delhi starting on January 20.
