Big News: India ODI squad for West Indies announced; Kohli, Rohit & other senior players missing

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the ODI squad for the three-ODI series against West Indies that will start later this month. Senior players like all-format captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya have been rested for the ODI series against the Nicholas Pooran-led side. Opener Shikhar Dhawan will be leading the India squad whereas Ravindra Jadeja has been named as vice-captain. 

 

Shubman Gill is making a comeback in the ODI team. The last ODI he played was in December 2020 against Australia. KL Rahul has not been included in the side as he is still recovering from the groin injury. Similarly, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav is missing from the squad as well.

 

The last time Dhawan led India was in 2021. Dhawan led a second-string squad in Sri Lanka. Under Dhawan's leadership, India beat Sri Lanka in the ODI series by 2-1. 

 

India's Caribbean tour will begin on July 22 at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain. The ODI series will go on till July 27. All three ODIs will be played at the same venue.

 

With the ODI squad announcement, it is clear that the focus is on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Keeping the workload of players in mind, the decision to rest players has been taken as the ODI series against England will conclude on July 17 at Manchester.

 

BCCI is yet to announce the T20I squad for the five-T20I series in West Indies that will be played from July 29 to August 7.
