Amidst rising Covid-19 cases in the country, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put a hold on all major domestic tournaments including Ranji Trophy 2022, women’s Senior T20 league, men’s CK Nayudu Trophy.

“BCCI does not want to compromise the safety of the players, support staff, match officials and other participants involved and hence, has decided to put the three tournaments on hold till further notice. The BCCI will continue to assess the situation and take a call on the start of the tournaments accordingly,” BCCI said in a statement.

“BCCI thanks and continues to appreciate the efforts of the healthcare workers, state associations, players, support staff, match officials and all the service providers who put their best foot forward to host more than 700 matches across 11 tournaments in the current 2021-22 domestic season,” the apex board added.

The indefinite postponement comes a day after six players of Bengal Ranji team – Sudip Chatterjee, Anustup Majumdar, Kazi Junaid Saifi, Geet Puri, Pradipta Pramanik and Surajit Yadav – tested positive for Covid-19 along with assistant coach Sourasish Lahiri. Also, Mumbai’s hard-hitting all-rounder Shivam Dube along with video analyst had contracted the virus.

Earlier a top BCCI source had told Sports Tak on January 3 that they are currently monitoring the situation before taking any action on Ranji Trophy. While the red-ball tournament was scheduled to commence on January 16, the women's T20 tournament was to begin in February. On the other hand, the ongoing Cooch Behar Trophy which is in its knockout stage was not included in the press release and is likely to continue.

Also, it is yet to be seen whether BCCI decides to host Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 in India or in United Arab Emirates (UAE) like they did will IPL 2020 and the second phase of IPL 2021.
