Benched for home Test series against West Indies and South Africa, Devdutt Padikkal scored a match-winning unbeaten century for Karnataka against Varun Chakaravarthy’s Tamil Nadu in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. Padikkal's ton helped Karnataka post a mammoth total of 245/3 on the board at Narendra Modi Stadium 'B' in Ahmedabad. Chasing the target, Tamil Nadu lost their star batter Sai Sudharsan early and suffered a batting collapse. They were bowled out for 100 in 14.2 overs and suffered a massive 145-run defeat.
Padikkal propels Karnataka to big total
Tamil Nadu skipper Chakaravarthy won the toss and opted to bowl first. Karnataka got off to a blazing start with BR Sharath and skipper Mayank Agarwal firing from both ends. Left-arm pacer T Natarajan got the breakthrough with Agarwal's wicket. The opener scored 24 runs from 15 deliveries. In the ninth over, Sharath fell to R Sonu Yadav after completing his fifty. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 53 runs from 23 balls. Karun Nair could not make a mark and got out lbw to Yadav for a single-digit score. Karnataka were 130/3 in the 11th over.
Padikkal did not let the tempo drop. Smaran Ravichandran supported him well from the other end. Padikkal reached his fifty from 26 balls. He did not take much time to get to his century. From just 45 balls, he completed his fourth T20 hundred. The top-order batter hit 10 fours and six sixes in his unbeaten 46-ball 102. On the other end, Ravichandran contributed with 46 runs from 29 balls.
Tamil Nadu lose 7 wickets for 9 runs
Chasing a target of 246, Tushar Raheja tried to provide an electrifying start. Shreyas Gopal drew first blood with by getting VP Amith Sathvik stumped for an 11-ball 15 in the third over. Sudharsan found just one boundary in the powerplay overs. In the sixth over, Vijaykumar Vyshak knocked him over for a single-digit score.
In his next over, Vyshak got the better of Raheja as well. The opener scored 29 runs from 18 balls. Narayan Jagadeesan and R Rajukumar tried to keep up with the required run rate but Gopal preyed on both of them. Shahrukh Khan and R Sai Kishore could not make an impact as Tamil Nadu suffered a collapse. From 91/3, they were bowled out for 100. Shubhang Hegde and Pravin Dubey got two wickets each.
Sudharsan’s dip in form
After low scores in the Guwahati Test, Sudharsan has registered scores of 13, 1 and 8 in the ongoing SMAT 2025. This is Tamil Nadu's third defeat from four games.
