Karachi-born cricketer Usman Khan entered history books when he hit the fastest century in Pakistan Super League (PSL) history. After a short stint with Multan Sultans (MS), there were speculations that Usman may be on Pakistan selectors’ radar, thanks to the 36-ball century against Quetta Gladiators. Few weeks later, Usman has made it clear that he does not want to represent Pakistan on the international stage. Instead, he wants to play for United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he currently resides.

“My dream is not to play for Pakistan. My dream is to play for UAE. I am working hard to do that. One day I want to play against Pakistan to show them my talent. I am waiting for my time,” the 28-year-old told The National.

Eligibility criteria to play for UAE

However, Usman will have to wait for few months to realise his dream or even be eligible for a spot in the UAE side. According to International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, Usman needs to be UAE for three years to be eligible for selection which won’t happen until later this year which means he is unlikely to feature in ODI World Cup 2023.

Usman clarified why he is not anxious to make his international debut for Pakistan. He revealed that he felt overlooked in their system. Now, he is positive to get the UAE cup soon enough.

“In Pakistan I felt like nobody was looking to me and I wasn’t getting a chance, so I wanted to go somewhere else for an opportunity. I came to UAE and have worked hard. I just want to work hard and then try to make the UAE team once I am eligible,” he said.

Not valued in Pakistan

“When corona[virus] happened, cricket went down in Pakistan and no-one was asking me to play. I decided to move to UAE for my cricket,” the opener said.

Usman’s T20 numbers

Usman has had a good record in T20 format. Apart from playing in PSL, he has played for Chattogram Challengers in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). From 21 appearances, he has scored 613 runs at an average of 30.65 including two centuries and two half-centuries. Also, his strike rate is an impressive 143.55.
