In a monumental achievement, Pakistan's World No. 1 batter, Babar Azam, has been honoured with the ICC Men's Player of the Month Award for August 2023. This distinction, which marks the third of its kind in Babar's illustrious career, comes on the heels of his magnificent performance in ODIs against Nepal and Afghanistan.
While Babar faced competition from the likes of teammate Shadab Khan and West Indies' Nicholas Pooran, his consistent form in the 50-over format ensured he stood out in the race.
"I am delighted to be named ICC Player of the Month for August 2023," Babar said.
"The past month has been extraordinary for my team and I as we have put some terrific performances. With the Asia Cup coming to Pakistan after such a long time, it was great to play in front of the passionate and cricket-loving crowds of Multan and Lahore. That I scored my second ODI score of 150-plus in front of my own people in Multan doubled the joy.
"I am looking forward to making the most of the form as we head into an exciting phase of cricket with the backend of the Asia Cup nearing and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup around the corner. My team and I are eager to bring joy and happiness to the millions of Pakistan fans," he added.
Though Babar witnessed a minor setback in his form post his commendable 151-run innings against Nepal in the Asia Cup opener, his contributions cannot be understated. He may have experienced a slight dip, scoring 17 against Bangladesh and 10 against India in the Asia Cup Super Fours, but his overall performance in the month remained unparalleled.
Babar's journey in August commenced with a momentary challenge as he failed to score against Afghanistan. However, displaying the hallmark of a champion, he roared back to form with back-to-back fifties, reinforcing his status as a cricketing titan.
Highlighting his prowess in the ongoing Asia Cup, Babar not only scored a scintillating 151 runs off 131 balls against Nepal but also etched his name in history books. He became the quickest cricketer ever to secure 19 ODI centuries. This remarkable feat brings his century tally to 31 across all formats for Pakistan, equating the records of legends like Javed Miandad and Saeed Anwar. Currently, he's hot on the trails of stalwarts like Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, and Inzamam-ul-Haq in terms of centuries scored for the nation.
