Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has been fined 15 per cent of match fees for breaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct for an incident against Bangladesh. The incident took place in the second T20I against Bangladesh where the Pakistani pacer was involved to have thrown a ball intentionally towards Afif Hossain.
The consequence of the throw resulted in the ball hitting the foot of the batter in third over of the innings. The incident was brought into notice to the match referee by on-field umpire Gazi Sohel. The match referee in the immediate aftermath fined the 21-year-old with 15 per cent match fees.
ICC further explained, Afridi was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
The left-arm pacer who was instrumental in Pakistan’s progress to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2021 has also been credited with one demerit point. As per the ICC ruoles, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
It is understood that the player has apologised to the Bangladesh player and has since accepted the charges. Pakistan have already won the three match T20I series by 2-0 and will go into the third and final encounter with their noses in front on Monday (November 21).
