Bangla Tigers knocked out from GT20 Canada after refusing to play super over in eliminator clash.

Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangla Tigers were knocked out from the Global T20 Canada 2024 league after they refused to play the eliminator clash against Toronto Nationals. The eliminator of the Global T20 Canada was declared forfeited by the Mississauga Bangla Tigers due to them refusing to play the super over against Toronto Nationals.

What happened?

The eliminator was caught in the hands of rain with rain gods playing a spoilsport. Eventually, the organizers decided that the match would be decided in a super over contest considering there was no time left.  It was decided that the toss would be conducted at 7:10 PM local time with the Super Over between the two sides starting at 7:30 PM.

Interestingly Toronto Nationals captain Colin Munro showed up at the toss for the contest but Mississauga Bangla Tigers’ skipper Shakib Al Hasan refused to come for the toss.

"The eliminator match of GT20 Canada Season 4 between the Mississauga Bangla Tigers and the Toronto Nationals was delayed due to rain. After repeated inspections, the umpires along with the match referee decided, going by the tournament regulations, that a super over would be played between the two teams at 7:30 pm with the toss to be held at 7:10pm." read an official statement regarding the match.

"Based on the report of the match referee, the Tournament Technical Committee unanimously decided to award the match to the Toronto Nationals who advanced to play the Brampton Wolves in the second qualifier," the statement concluded.

Bangla Tigers discontent

Shakib-led team refused to play the Super Over because if the contest was a complete washout (with no scope of Super Over either), Bangla Tigers would have automatically advanced to Qualifier 2 as they finished above Toronto Nationals in the league stage. The Tigers were unhappy with a super over deciding the match’s fate and thus showing their discontent Shakib didn’t turn up at the toss.

Bangla Tigers owner Zafar Yasin even questioned the tournament organizers. He said “If the team owner intended to assist the tournament by purchasing covers, such a contribution should have been made before the tournament began, not before a crucial match. This situation raises concerns about the integrity of the league and the possibility that the league’s management decisions were influenced in favour of that team,” Yasin was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
