Sans Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith has been given the responsibility to lead Australia's ODI team. Meanwhile, Smith will also be seen opening Australia's innings in Tests following David Warner's retirement. Meanwhile, Australia women thrashed India women in the third T20I to finally clinch the series 2-1.

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India lost yet another final to Australia. In the decider of three-T20I series, Annabel Sutherland's economical spell followed by half-centuries from captain Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney led the visitors to a seven-wicket win with eight balls to spare. 

 

Steve Smith to lead Australia in Cummins' absence

 

Cricket Australia's (CA) selection committee revealed the squads for the upcoming Test and ODI outings against West Indies in their home series on Wednesday, January 10.  Australia have decided to give their premier fast-bowling trio – Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc – a break for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies. This move is part of a tactical plan aimed at managing the key players' workload. In the absence of bigwigs, Steve Smith will take the helm as the team's captain. The team management has also given all-rounder Mitchell Marsh some time off, while Marcus Stoinis, despite his recent triumph in India last November, is not included in the squad.
 

ICC hands one demerit point to Newlands pitch

 

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on January 8 rated the pitch used for the second Test between India and South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town as 'unsatisfactory' as the low-scoring game ended within five sessions. 
 ICC match referee Chris Broad in his report wrote that the match officials were concerned about the nature of the pitch. After the assessment, the pitch was rated 'unsatisfactory'.
