Much happened on the opening day of the Ashes opener at Edgbaston as riding on Joe Root's century England piled up 393/8 on the board before declaring their innings in a bold move.
After winning the toss, England found themselves reeling at 176/5 after losing two wickets in quick succession. But Root put up a show with the willow and notched a brilliant unbeaten 118 to steady England's boat. It was Root's first Ashes century in eight years and 30th overall in Tests. After Root brought his century Stokes declared England's innings and invited Australia to bat for the rest 20 minutes before stumps.

Root combined with Jonny Bairstow (78) to stitch a 121-run partnership to steer England to a challenging total. But Nathan Lyon got rid of Bairstow on the score of 78 to script Australia's back. Lyon returned with an impressive bowling figure of 4/149.
Later, Australia closed the Day 1's play at an overnight score of 14 for no loss. But things panned out differently for Australia on Day 2 as Stuart Broad drew first blood for England and make David Warner his bunny again and halted his 27-ball struggle on the first ball of the 11th over. He didn't stop there and returned to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne on golden duck on the very next ball to leave Australia jolted at 29/2. Ben Stokes did no less as he produced a stunning in-swinger which missed Smith's bat and the batter was given out LBW which left Australia in trouble yet again.
Travis Head and opener Usman Khawaja steadies Australia's boat and steered them to 148/3 before the former returned to pavilion after scoring a brilliant 50.
