UP Warriorz stayed alive in the race to the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 eliminator with a one-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC) but two of their players were fined for breaching the Code of Conduct. UP Warriorz's Sophie Ecclestone and Kiran Navgire faced a 10 per cent fine for breaching Article 2.2 of the WPL's code of conduct.
"Both Sophie and Kiran admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 which relates to the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a match," a WPL statement read.
"For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding," it added.
With a one-run win over Meg Lanning-led DC, UP Warriorz are placed fourth on the points table. They still have a chance of reaching the WPL 2024 eliminator but there are a few permutations and combinations involved.
They will face Gujarat Giants in their last league clash on March 11. A win may not guarantee them a place in the eliminator but will keep their hopes alive.
Ecclestone – the star performer
Left-arm spinner Ecclestone is UP Warriorz's leading wicket-taker in the season with eight wickets from seven games. She played a crucial role in the win against DC with the wicket of Alice Capsey and conceding just 15 runs from her quota of four overs.
Navgire’s poor run in WPL 2024
Kiran Navgire has not lived up to expectations with just one half-century in the season so far that came against table-toppers Mumbai Indians (MI). She has scored 110 runs from seven games at an average of 15.71.
What happened in game against DC?
Deepti Sharma carried UP Warriorz on her back with both bat and ball. Only three of their batters managed to score in double digits. Deepti scored 59 runs from 48 deliveries including six fours and a six. They posted a respectable total of 138/8.
In the run chase, Lanning led the charge while wickets fell at the other end. But Deepti tightened the screws with the wicket of Lanning in the 14th over. She picked up four wickets for just 19 runs. In the final over, Grace Harris managed to defend the total despite conceding a six off the first ball as UP Warriorz won by one run.
