Saudi Arabian Pro League outfit Al Nassr broke the internet when they announced the signing of superstar forward Cristiano Ronaldo on a record-breaking contract. Ronaldo, who spent over 20 years lighting up Europe with his astute skill and ability to score brilliant goals, is a household name in football despite a dip in his form in the last year.
After a subpar FIFA World Cup 2022 with Portugal, during which the striker mutually terminated his second coming with Manchester United, Ronaldo's next big news was his move to Al Nassr. He is set to become the best-paid footballer in the world with his contract reportedly worth over 200 million euros.
The contract is worth two-and-a-half years which would keep him in Saudi until the summer of 2025. Hours after the Ronaldo signing was announced, the Instagram following of the club tripled and is still going strong.
Al Nassr had roughly 860K followers before the big transfer. As of 11 am IST on Saturday, Al Nassr's Instagram following had risen to 2.9 million and it is expected to only grow bigger in the days to come. Notably, Ronaldo followed the Instagram account of his new club as well.
The forward is set to miss two games in the Saudi domestic season as he was banned for knocking a phone out of a fan's hand after United's defeat at Everton in April.
Al Nassr were delighted with the signing of the superstar, saying that his arrival will inspire the club, the league and the nation.
"This is more than history in the making. This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation, and future generations, boys and girls to be the best version of themselves," Al Nassr said.
Speaking about his decision to sign for Al Nassr, Ronaldo said it was the right time to move to Asia. The senior campaigner, considered one of the best in the world, is heading to Asia for potentially his swansong.
"I am fortunate that I have won everything I set out to win in European football and feel now that this is the right moment to share my experience in Asia," Ronaldo said, as quoted by Al Nassr.
Ronaldo will hope to help Al Nassr add to their nine Saudi Pro League titles. Al Nassr last won the league title in 2019 and will be hoping to win the AFC Champions League for the first time.
