Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat who was disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 after securing a berth in the final has appealed against her elimination with CAS (court of Arbitration for sports). Vinesh was disqualified after being found overweight ahead of her women's 50kg. Phogat created history after becoming the first Indian women wrestler to qualify for the semifinal.
Before this morning, she was assured of at least a silver medal but will now be coming back empty-handed due to the disqualification. If the Verdict came in favour of the Indian wrestler then she will get a silver medal. If Vinesh gets a silver medal that will be the first silver medal for India in women's wrestling.
How Vinesh Gets Silver Medal
"Vinesh Phogat has appealed against her elimination with CAS (court of Arbitration for sports). She has asked that she be given the silver medal. CAS has asked till tomorrow morning to give its final verdict.
If CAS rules on Vinesh’s favour IOC will have to award a joint silver to Vinesh" told sources close to Sports Tak.
When will CAS give the verdict
The Court of Arbitration for Sports will give a verdict on Vinesh's appeal on August 8 at 11.30 AM IST.
“CAS will reply to Vinesh in the morning (around 11:30am IST) if CAS rules in Vinesh’s favour then she will be awarded a joint silver. CAS verdict will be binding on IOC” added the report.
Why Vinesh Phogat Disqualified
Vinesh Phogat was disqualified because she was slightly overweight during the weighing ahead of the final. The shattered 29-year-old had to be taken to the polyclinic inside the Games village due to severe dehydration earlier in the day.
"She was found overweight by 100gm this morning. The rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified," said an Indian coach.
The Indian Olympic Association requested privacy for the wrestler, who was competing in her third Olympics.
"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a
few grams over 50kg this morning," the IOA stated.
"No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh's privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand," it added.
