PV Sindhu settles for another silver, loses to World no.7 Wang Zhi Yi in Malaysia Masters 2024 title clash

PV Sindhu will be eyeing her third Olympic medal in the upcoming Paris Olympics. Sindhu lost to China's Wang Zhi Yi at Malaysia Masters 2024 in the final.

Sindhu lost the summit clash against Wang Zhi Yi

India's ace shuttler PV Sindhu lost in the final of Malaysia Masters 2024 final clash against world No. 7 Wang Zhi Yi of China on May 26. Sindhu started the finale with a massive 11-3 lead after winning the opener game. Wang Zhi Yi made a comeback after the first game and won the title by 21-16 5-21 16-21 in the final that lasted 79 minutes. 

 

Sindhu last won the Singapore Open and Commonwealth Games in 2022 and finished runner-up at the Madrid Spain Masters in 2023.

 

After losing in the final, Sindhu said that she took a lot of positives from the clash. 
 

"Overall, I can say that it's been a very good match. It's a bit disappointing, but a lot of positives to take from this match and the whole tournament as well," said Sindhu ranked 15th in the world.

 

"I am happy that I at least came to the finals, I played well. These matches will definitely give me a lot of confidence, but I could have won that. It's just not one of those days."

 

Double Olympics medallist Sindhu had lost to Wang at the Arctic Open last year but defeated the Chinese twice in three meetings. Sindhu defeated Wang during her last BWF title at the Singapore Open.

The 28-year-old will be eyeing her third Olympic medal in the upcoming Paris Olympics. She has been low-key since she made a comeback from a knee injury this year.

 

Sindhu was seen struggling against big guns such as Carolina Marin, Tai Tzu Ying, Chen Yu Fei, and Akane Yamaguchi. She lost a clash against Tai Tzu in the last edition of the Olympics which was hosted by Tokyo in 2021. It would be interesting to see how she will fare against these opponents at the Games.
