In an unexpected turn of events, the United World Wrestling (UWW) has handed down a suspension to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). This decisive action stems from WFI's non-compliance with the stipulated timeframe for conducting its elections. Consequently, the path to the World Championships now comes with a stipulation for Indian wrestlers - they cannot compete under the national flag but as neutral athletes.
This suspension is attributed to the inefficiencies of WFI's ad-hoc panel, with Bhupender Singh Bajwa at the helm, who missed the 45-day deadline for the elections. It's noteworthy that this isn't a sudden clampdown. The UWW had forewarned the WFI of such repercussions in April, highlighting the importance of adhering to deadlines. The timing of the suspension announcement – just a day ahead of the World Championships trials in Patiala – added to the gravity of the situation.
In the midst of this imbroglio, there's a silver lining for the Indian wrestlers aiming for the Asian Games slated to start on September 23. Since the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) handles the entries for the Asian Games and not the WFI, the Indian flag will still flutter for them, as per reports from PTI news agency.
A deeper look into the WFI's workings reveals internal fissures. Gian Singh, a member of the ad-hoc panel, has pointed fingers at Bajwa, implying a lack of transparency in his leadership. This administrative disarray manifested in WFI's inability to organise timely elections. Originally, May 7 was earmarked for WFI's elections. But legal entanglements and grievances from several state bodies led to subsequent postponements.
The present discord in the governing body stands in stark contrast to the recent accolades in Indian wrestling. Taking the spotlight was the national women's team that clinched the team title at the U-20 World Championships, surpassing wrestling stalwarts like Japan and the USA.
For the future, it's imperative for the WFI to swiftly resolve its internal complexities. The federation must stand as a pillar, backing the talented wrestlers who aim to represent India on international platforms. The roadmap that the WFI charts now will determine whether Indian wrestlers can truly showcase their prowess and dedication for their nation in significant global tournaments.
