Singapore Open 2024: PV Sindhu keeps India's hopes alive after Chirag-Satwik's exit, advances to round of 16 with dominant win

India's ace shuttler PV Sindhu picked up a dominant win over her Denmark opponent Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt in the first round of the Singapore Open 2024, on May 29 (Wednesday). This is a big win for her as she is coming after a loss in the final of the Malaysia Masters against Kristy Gilmour. Another thing that makes this win big is that Sindhu has kept India's hope of getting a medal alive. 

 

PV Sindhu advances to next round

 

India's two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu dominated Kjaersfeldt in the first two games in the match that lasted for 44 minutes. She won the first game comfortably by 21-12. In the second game, the Danish shuttler fought back but eventually lost the round 22-20.

Sindhu will now go against Spanish badminton player Carolina Maria Marin Martin in the round of 16. Marin is coming into this match after a win against Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei. 

 

Earlier, world no.1 shutter duo from India, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a shock exit from the round of the Singapore Open after losing to Denmark pair Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard in straight sets in men's doubles competition.

 

Sindhu secures Olympics Quota

 

PV Sindhu has also secured quota for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics along with four other Indian shuttlers, as per the latest ‘Race to Paris’ Ranking List released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The Paris Games are scheduled to begin in June. PV Sindhu who won silver at the 2016 Olympics and bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, earned the coveted berth by ranking 12th on the list released on April 30, as reported by Olympics.com.
