Asian Games 2026 overview and India's performance.
The Asian Games 2026 concluded with India finishing fourth on the medals table, securing a total of 85 medals including 21 golds. Despite this respectable position, India experienced a notable decline compared to the previous edition in Hangzhou, where the country won 107 medals. The shortfall of 22 medals highlights areas where India’s sporting development regressed rather than progressed. Top countries included China with 341 medals, Japan with 269, and South Korea with 150, all outpacing India’s total tally.
India's performance saw significant setbacks in certain key sports between the 2022 and 2026 editions. Athletics, a traditionally strong area, witnessed a decrease from 29 gold medals to just one gold in 2026, despite winning 24 total medals. This drop in gold medals reflects missed opportunities in athletic events. Shooting, another crucial medal contributor, suffered the largest decline with 22 medals in 2022 dropping to 15 in 2026, accounting for a loss of seven medals. Similarly, rowing saw a dramatic reduction from five medals to only one.
Other sports contributing to the medal shortfall included badminton, where the medal count dropped from three to just one team medal in 2026, and equestrian, where India failed to secure any medals compared to two (including a gold) in 2022. Tennis also recorded a worrying outcome with zero medals in 2026 for the first time ever at the Asian Games. Collectively, these six sports caused the 22-medal deficit impacting India's overall standing.
The pistol shooting category was particularly detrimental to India’s results. The country earned eight medals (three golds, four silvers, and one bronze) in 2022 but managed only a single silver medal in 2026. Despite strong performances by key shooters in the previous games, this decline severely affected India’s medal tally. In contrast, better performances in sports such as hockey (two golds), cricket (two expected golds), and archery (nine medals including two golds) were highlights but not enough to offset losses elsewhere.
1. India secured fourth place with 85 total medals, down from 107 in 2022.
2. Shooting, athletics, badminton, equestrian, tennis, and rowing were key areas of medal loss.
3. Archery and trap shooting emerged as strong disciplines for India in 2026.
