Atlanta Hawks head into their next NBA Cup matchup under pressure after suffering one of their most lopsided defeats of the season. Their recent 132-113 loss to the Washington Wizards exposed significant vulnerabilities, and with multiple key players sidelined, the focus now shifts to how the injury report shapes their chances against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Hawks look to recover after heavy defeat
Calling the loss to the Wizards a setback would be an understatement. Washington—holding the worst record in the league—dominated from start to finish, leading by as many as 33 points. Atlanta’s defense had no answers as CJ McCollum exploded for 46 points while shooting an incredible 10-of-13 from beyond the arc. Kristaps Porzingis added 22 points and eight rebounds, while Zaccharie Risacher showed improvement from deep, hitting four of his nine attempts.
Offensively, Atlanta’s showing against the Wizards was far from their usual output. Despite ranking 6th in field-goal percentage and 10th in three-point shooting this season, the team struggled to find rhythm. Advanced numbers still support their capability to compete, with the Hawks sitting 16th in offensive rating.
Their defense, however, took a major hit. Entering the game with top-15 rankings in points allowed and defensive rating, the Hawks were unable to establish any resistance. The loss revealed that early-season issues continue to persist.
NBA Cup stakes and the challenge ahead
Despite their 1-2 record in Group A, Atlanta can play spoiler tonight against the Cavaliers. Cleveland’s offense is heavily dependent on Donovan Mitchell, whose dominant performances often decide their fate. When he struggles, the Cavaliers’ attack falters significantly, as seen in their recent sub-100-point outing against the Raptors.
With Jarrett Allen set to return, Cleveland’s defense will be close to full strength—ranking 13th in points allowed and 4th in blocks per game. The matchup serves as a critical test for Atlanta’s resilience.
