Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is considered as one of the greatest players to have graced the court and even a true generational talent. However, many believe James doesn’t receive the credit he should deserve even after his long illustrious career. The upcoming star for San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama, recently shared his thoughts and named LeBron as the most underrated player in the NBA today.
Victor Wembanyama: LeBron James is most underrated player in the NBA
Playing in his second season in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama has already made a name for himself after earning his first All-Star selection and further solidifying his status as a frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year. Despite his sudden rise, the 19-year-old phenom has immense respect for the veteran LeBron, who is currently playing in his 22nd season at the age of 40.
While James may not be regarded as the top player in the league today, Wembanyama feels the other way around as he is still in awe of his performance.
The 40-year-old continues to dominate the court and remains among the elite, something that impresses the young Spurs star. According to Wembanyama, LeBron is far from getting the credit he deserves for maintaining such a high level of play.
Wembanyama on LeBron’s underrated status
When asked who he thought was the most underrated player in the NBA, Wembanyama pointed to LeBron James without hesitation. In an interview with NBA on TNT, he explained:
I’m gonna go with LeBron. Underrated just means you’re not rated at your right value right? I think LeBron is underrated.
Wembanyama’s take on the 'underrated' remark highlights the perception that James’ performance, especially at his age, often goes underappreciated. While many tend to focus on LeBron’s age and how his performance may not be as consistent as in his prime years, Wembanyama believes these critiques miss the bigger picture.
At 40, it’s understandable that LeBron’s abilities may have taken a hit, but the fact that he is still able to perform at an elite level is nothing short of remarkable.
LeBron’s continued success is a testament to his skill and work ethic. This season, he is averaging an impressive 24.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game. He is shooting near 40% from beyond the arc for the second consecutive year and has recorded 10 triple-doubles, ranking second in the league behind reigning MVP Nikola Jokic.
