Gujarat Giants' Lauren Cheatle will miss the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 season after getting treated for skin cancer. This isn't Australian star pacer Cheatle's first experience with such surgery as she previously underwent a similar procedure on her leg in 2021. Beside missing WPL 2024, the undergoing medical procedure has also ruled Cheatle out of the rest of the Women's National Cricket League (WNCL) games for New South Wales.
"Cheatle is aiming to return to training with NSW following the players' scheduled off-season break," Cricket NSW said in a statement.
Cheatle, who recently debuted in Test cricket for Australia against India in December 2023, was poised to participate in the WPL for the first time after being drafted by the Gujarat Giants. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old left-arm fast bowler will now be out of action for several months due to her recent surgery. She aims to return during the off-season, ahead of the new season beginning in September.
Having debuted for Australia in ODIs and T20Is in 2017, Cheatle's career has been marred by injuries, including three shoulder reconstructions. Her playing time has been limited, with only four ODIs and seven T20Is under her belt. The recent surgery also means she will be absent from the upcoming one-off Test match between the Australian and South African women's teams.
