This victory represents only the sixth win for the Kiwis against South Africa in their 48 encounters dating back to their first clash in 1932, highlighting a rare moment of dominance against the Proteas.

Kane Williamson's historic achievement of scoring two centuries in a single Test propelled New Zealand to a substantial lead of 528 runs by the end of the third day. In a strategic move, the hosts declared their innings early on the fourth day, setting an imposing target for South Africa to chase.
Shaky start to the run chase for South Africa
The South African innings got off to a shaky start with Matt Henry and Tim Southee quickly removing openers Neil Brand and Edward Moore, applying early pressure on the visitors. Despite a brief fightback with a 63-run partnership between Raynard van Tonder (31) and Zubayr Hamza (36), their efforts were short-lived as they were both dismissed in quick succession.
David Bedingham and Keegan Petersen show fight
David Bedingham and Keegan Petersen then provided a glimmer of hope for South Africa with a 105-run stand for the fifth wicket. Bedingham, in particular, was aggressive, scoring 87 runs off 96 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes, showcasing his batting prowess.
Kyle Jamieson bags four wickets
However, New Zealand's Kyle Jamieson dismantled the South African middle order, claiming the wickets of van Tonder, Hamza, Bedingham, and Petersen, ending with impressive figures of 17-3-58-4. Despite Ruan de Swardt's resilient 34 runs off 56 balls, his efforts could only delay the inevitable defeat for South Africa.
Mitchell Santner also played a significant role, taking three crucial wickets, as New Zealand efficiently bowled out South Africa for 247 runs in 80 overs.
Rachin Ravindra was named Player of the Match for his outstanding double-century in the first innings, a key factor in New Zealand's dominant performance.
The series moves to Hamilton for the second Test, scheduled to start on February 13 at Seddon Park, where New Zealand will look to seal the series win or South Africa will aim to level the series standings.
