Virat Kohli has idolised Sachin Tendulkar and shared the same dressing room when India won the ODI World Cup in 2011. Tendulkar passed on the baton to Kohli who has been smashing record across all formats. A team against which Tendulkar played his last Test, Kohli will become the second Indian to achieve this record in Test cricket.
On July 12 as India play West Indies in Dominica, Kohli will become the second Indian to play against ‘father-son’ duo in Test cricket. Kohli had played against Shivnarine Chanderpaul in 2011. In the same series, Kohli made his Test debut. Now, he will play against Shivnarine’s son, Tagenarine Chanderpaul.
Earlier, Tendulkar had faced Geoff Marsh in Australia in 1992. Nearly two decades later, Tendulkar faced Geoff's son Shaun Marsh in the Test series on Australian soil. It was the last time Tendulkar played a Test in overseas conditions.
Chanderpaul retired as the second-highest run-scorer for West Indies in Test cricket. He scored 11,867 runs from 164 Tests at an average of 51.37 including 30 centuries and 66 fifties. He played his last Test against England in May 2015.
Several years later, Tagenarine made his Test debut against Australia at Perth. So far, he has scored 453 runs from six Tests at an average of 45.30 including one century and half-century. The 27-year-old has scored a Test double century already.
Kohli has not had a good record on West Indies soil in red-ball cricket. He has scored 463 runs from nine Tests at an average of 35.61 including one century and two fifties. He scored his maiden Test double ton in West Indies. In a recent interview, he said that it is his favourite memory in West Indies.
“My favourite memory obviously is Antigua. I got my first-ever double hundred in Test cricket in Antigua in front of Sir Vivian Richards. That for me was a very, very special moment and then he met me in the evening as well and congratulated me. It can't get any better than that,” Kohli said on the Star Sports show ‘Follow the Blues’.
