Pathum Nissanka belted a cracking 210 off 139 in the first ODI against Afghanistan.

Pathum Nissanka scripted history by becoming the first Sri Lankan batter to score a double century in ODIs on February 9, Friday. Pathum Nissanka accomplished this feat during the first ODI against Afghanistan in Pallekele, scoring 200 runs off just 136 balls. His remarkable innings also saw him become the third-fastest player to reach a double century in ODIs, surpassing the likes of Chris Gayle, who achieved the milestone in 138 balls, and Virender Sehwag, who took 140 balls.

Pathum's towering feat

In addition to this milestone, Nissanka surpassed Sanath Jayasuriya's long-standing record for the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan batter in ODIs. He achieved this by taking a couple of runs off Gulbadin Naib on the fifth ball of the 49th over. Not content with just breaking the record, Nissanka finished the over by hitting a six off the final ball and followed it up with a boundary off the second ball of the final over to reach the historic milestone.

Ishan Kishan tops the chart

Ishan Kishan currently holds the record for the fastest double century in ODI cricket. Kishan achieved this milestone by scoring 200 runs in just 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022. Following closely behind Kishan is Glenn Maxwell, who recorded a double century in 128 balls against Afghanistan in the recently concluded ODI World Cup.

With Nissanka's accomplishment, he joins the ranks of the elite few who have scored double centuries in ODIs, becoming the 10th batter to do so. Among them, Rohit Sharma stands out with three double centuries, holding the record for the most double centuries by any batter in ODI cricket. Other notable players who have breached the 200-run mark in ODIs include Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Martin Guptill, Fakhar Zaman, Chris Gayle, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, and Glenn Maxwell.
