The emergence and rise of young cricketers in India fold is proving to be an impasse in the way of already established players. There are only handful of players who can claim their regularity in the India squad. Even a player of Virat Kohli's repute can't take his place in Indian team for granted.
Players restricting themselves to just one or two format has become a norm now in wake of increasing workload and busy schedule of International cricket. In the backdrop of so much depth in Indian cricket, it's getting tough to accommodate every player in a single format and the senior players are facing the heat to take some crucial calls regarding their careers.
One such India's senior player is Shikhar Dhawan who is struggling to break back into Men in Blue's T20I fold. However, he continues to be an integral part of India's ODI squad but is finding it tough to make it to the shortest format of the game. Dhawan played his last T20I match back in July last year.
In an exclusive conversation with Sports Tak, India's star southpaw opened up on the entire scenario and said," To be honest. I don't feel any disappointment as such. I feel that there is a time for everything and maybe it's not my time. Maybe I lack something that I haven't been able to do too well. So worries, I gave my best and that's what matters. Till the time I am happy and content that is all I care about. It's not like if my name doesn't come, I will be affected or anything like that. I am in a very good space; I am doing my best".
Riding on Dhawan's captaincy, India claimed an ODI series whitewash against West Indies where he belted 97 and 58 in three innings and also scored a fifty in the first ODI against England.
He can also be seen spearheading the Team India in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe which is set to kick off from August 18 to August 22. However it will be interesting to see whether he can make a cut in the India's squad for the marquee Asia Cup 2022. The last time when the Asia Cup was played – in 2018 – Dhawan scored over 320 runs, playing a crucial role in India winning.
"If the opportunity provides then why not? When I play the IPL, I try my best to perform. And if I do well there, I might get chances. Rest is up to the selectors… what their thought process is, what is their vision. Like I said, if it comes, great, but even if it doesn't, that's also fine. I am keeping myself fit and strong and whenever I get the opportunity, I am ready for it," Dhawan added.
