Asia Cup 2023, India vs Pakistan: Sans KL Rahul, how will Ishan Kishan fit in India's batting line-up?

KL Rahul was included in India's squad for the Asia Cup 2023 despite picking up a niggle while recovering from a thigh injury that sidelined him for nearly three months. Rahul encountered a fresh niggle that rendered him uncertain for the initial matches of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Team India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Rahul's "unrelated" injury prompted his inclusion in the 17-man extended squad for the Asia Cup, alongside the addition of Sanju Samson as a traveling reserve. The expectation remained that Rahul's recuperation would enable his participation in the latter stages of the competition.

However, as the team set off for Sri Lanka, head coach Rahul Dravid disclosed that KL Rahul would miss the first two matches, including the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on September 2. Dravid emphasised that Rahul's absence was a precautionary measure and that a decision regarding his return would be taken after assessing his performance in a couple of simulation matches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

India's reliance on Rahul's performance has posed a challenge in his absence. The team is likely to position Ishan Kishan as the wicketkeeper-batter ahead of Sanju Samson for the crucial Group A match against Pakistan. With Shreyas Iyer's return to the XI, the shuffle becomes more intricate, as Iyer's natural position is at No. 4. As KL Rahul primarily batted at No. 5, his vacancy creates a gap that the team aims to address effectively.

Ishan Kishan's role in the lineup remains pivotal. The left-handed batter showcased success as an opener in ODIs in the recent past, most notably with a double hundred against Bangladesh. However, Kishan's middle-order appearances against New Zealand and Australia yielded mixed results, prompting India to experiment with Shubman Gill at the top.

Former India captain and chief selector Kris Srikkanth proposed the idea of Ishan Kishan opening the batting, especially against Pakistan's formidable bowling lineup. Considering India's susceptibility to left-arm pacers, Srikkanth advocated for allowing Kishan the freedom to attack and set the tempo against Pakistan's bowlers.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's flexibility within the lineup came under scrutiny as well. Sharma acknowledged the need for adaptability among batters, but questions lingered about applying this principle to experienced players. Just as Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar once made strategic adjustments for the team's benefit, similar decisions from Kohli and Sharma could contribute to India's success in the challenging matchup against Pakistan.

As India confronts an energized Pakistan side, the team's approach will be pivotal. The lineup shuffle necessitated by Rahul's absence underscores the importance of strategic decisions and the determination to face the competition with unwavering conviction.
