Mohammed Siraj, with his impeccable bowling spell, not only led India to a commanding victory in the Asia Cup 2023 final but also won hearts by dedicating his Player of the Match's prize money to the hardworking groundsmen. His recognition aligns with the recent appreciation from the Asian Cricket Council for these unsung heroes who made the tournament feasible despite relentless rain challenges.

In the backdrop of the enthralling Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka, star Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj emerged as a stalwart. His formidable 6/21 spell was pivotal in ensuring India's resounding ten-wicket triumph over the hosts, solidifying their eighth victory in this prestigious Continental championship.

The 29-year-old maestro, recognized for his on-field prowess, was rewarded with a Player of the Match honor along with a cash incentive of $5000 (equivalent to INR 415,452 approximately). In a touching move, Siraj chose to dedicate this monetary award to the tournament's groundsmen.

"Have been bowling well since a long time. Was missing the edges earlier but found them today. The wicket was seaming earlier, but there was swing today. [I] Thought that I will bowl fuller because of the swing. When there's good bonding between fast bowlers, it's helpful for the team. I was thinking it would be great if I could stop the boundary. My best spell. This cash prize [$5000 or INR 415,452 approx] goes to the groundsmen. This tournament wouldn't have been possible without them," Siraj said after winning the Player of the Match award following India's victory.

This gesture throws light on the pivotal role the groundsmen played, especially in this edition of the tournament. Their mettle was tested as persistent rain plagued the Asia Cup 2023, particularly in the Colombo segment. Almost every match witnessed rainfall interruptions, leading to frequent halts. Yet, the relentless efforts of the groundstaffs ensured prompt resumption of matches. They meticulously covered the expansive grounds and made certain that once the downpour ceased, play could resume without extensive delays.

In sync with Siraj's sentiments, the Asian Cricket Council, represented by its chief Jay Shah, acknowledged the tireless efforts of these unsung heroes. Shah declared a special bonus of USD 50,000 dedicated to the ground staff based in both Colombo and Kandy—the two Sri Lankan venues that hosted this series. The remaining four matches unfolded in Pakistan.

"Big Shoutout to the Unsung Heroes of Cricket! The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are proud to announce a well-deserved prize money of USD 50,000 for the dedicated curators and groundsmen at Colombo and Kandy. Their unwavering commitment and hard work made the Asia Cup 2023 an unforgettable spectacle. From pitch perfection to lush outfields, they ensured the stage was set for thrilling cricket action. This recognition highlights the critical role these individuals play in cricket's success. Let's celebrate and honour their yeoman services, " wrote Shah on Twitter.

The cornerstone of India's glorious performance was undoubtedly Siraj's mesmerizing spell. His artistry ensured that Sri Lanka was restricted to a dismal 50 runs total. With this formidable bowling display, the Men in Blue effortlessly accomplished the target in a mere 6.1 overs, celebrating their 8th Asia Cup title win.
