A brilliant innings of 199 runs by Shreyas Iyer during a practice match in Bangalore was the evidence that the selectors needed to confirm that the middle-order batter was prepared for a return to Team India for the Asia Cup.
Prior to a severe back injury that demanded surgical intervention in England, Iyer was actively representing India across all formats. However, this injury benched him from international matches since March.
A credible BCCI source conveyed to a leading news daily, "He smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. In order to further demonstrate his fitness, he took on fielding responsibilities for the entire 50 overs of that match."
This practice match took place at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore a few days ago.
While KL Rahul's recuperation from injury was largely public due to the frequent updates he shared on social media, Iyer opted for a subtler approach. "He has dedicated the past two months at the NCA in Bangalore, channelling all his energy towards recovery. Everything seems to have aligned perfectly for him now," mentioned the same source.
Expressing his gratitude, Iyer shared on Instagram alongside a picture with NCA medical chief Nitin Patel and trainer Rajnikanth Sivagnanam: "Been a long journey but I'm super grateful to the people who stood by my side to help me get to where I am today. Thank you Nitin bhai, Rajni sir & everyone at the NCA, also outside of it, who's been tirelessly helping me. Much love and much appreciated."
On a related note, it is understood that Team India's preparatory camp for the Asia Cup is slated to commence on Friday at Alur.
Prithvi Shaw to continue with Northamptonshire
In the meanwhile, Northamptonshire has shown keen interest in Prithvi Shaw. Despite a knee injury curtailing his participation in the One Cup after just three matches, Northants have extended a contract offer to Shaw for the forthcoming County cricket season. "The Northants have offered Prithvi a contract for the next season. They are extremely pleased with him," shared a source with TOI.
Shaw's injury, fortunately, doesn't require surgery. A source elaborated, "There is a grade 2 tear of the PCL. Presently, he is consulting with one of the premier knee specialists globally, Andy Williams in London. This knee expert has an impressive track record, having assisted numerous elite cricketers and footballers."
