Asia Cup: Kohli wants Indian batters to stay sharp against Pakistan bowling attack, says ‘…they can change course of the game anytime’

As anticipation builds for the Asia Cup 2023, Virat Kohli wants Indian batters to be wary of Pakistan's formidable bowling attack when the arch-rivals lock horns on September 2, Saturday. Ahead of the much-awaited game in Pallekele, Kohli acknowledges the challenge posed by Pakistan's bowling attack, led by their pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi.

Recalling his stellar performance in the T20 World Cup last year, where he orchestrated a sensational victory with a magical knock of 82 runs from 53 balls against Pakistan in Melbourne, Kohli stands as a confident and experienced contender for the mother of all clashes. His remarkable innings earned praise from various quarters, with Rohit Sharma labeling it as Kohli's finest and former Pakistani cricketers lauding his display of skill and prowess.

Pakistan enters the tournament with a potent pace attack, featuring the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah, who are firing on all cylinders. Additionally, leg-spinner Shadab Khan's effectiveness adds another dimension to their bowling strategy. With Pallekele's pitch proving conducive to spin, as demonstrated in the tournament's first match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Kohli acknowledges Pakistan's strength in their bowling department.

In an interview with Star Sports, Kohli highlighted the need to be at one's peak performance to navigate Pakistan's bowling challenge. He stated, "I feel bowling is their strength. And they've got some really impactful bowlers that can change the course of the game anytime based on their skill set. So, you have to be at your absolute best to face them."

While Kohli didn't get a chance to bat in the recent ODI series in West Indies, his consistent form in the 50-over format remains noteworthy. With 554 runs in 13 matches since the Bangladesh tour last year, including three centuries, Kohli's dedication and hard work reflect his commitment to excellence.

Underscoring his relentless pursuit of improvement, Kohli emphasised that complacency has no place in his approach. He views each practice session, season, and year as opportunities to enhance his skills and contribute to the team's success. According to Kohli, this mindset naturally translates into consistent performance, where the team's victory takes precedence.

"I only try to understand how I can better my game. Every day, every practice session, every year, every season, this is what has helped me play this well for so long and to perform for my team," Virat Kohli added.

''I don't think you can perform consistently without that mindset because if your performance is your only goal, then you can be satisfied and stop working hard. There is no limit to it.  There is no set achievement that if you reach a certain stage, you've reached excellence. I think I strive for betterment every day, so that is a better word to use, and yes, performance obviously becomes a by-product because your mindset is 'How do I make my team win from this position?''

As a seasoned player with a strong track record against Pakistan in Asia Cup tournaments, Kohli's insights provide a glimpse into the mindset of a player who continuously strives to elevate his game. With his average of over 50 and notable performances against Pakistan, cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate his performance in the upcoming Asia Cup clash, where Kohli's strategic approach and batting prowess could prove pivotal in India's quest for victory.
